Advocacy groups threaten lawsuit for the legislature

BOSTON (WWLP) - The ballot question 1 campaign was centered around letting sunshine in to shine a light on state finances and has the support of advocacy groups from both sides of the aisle.
These advocacy groups say the law took effect several weeks ago and held a State House press conference to talk about their plans for legal action. The press conference featured one of the first signers of the petition that eventually became ballot question 1.
"Our state legislature is not being there for their constituency. They're not representing their interests, they're representing their own personal, selfish interests," said Jennifer Nassour, an original petition signer.
The petition-signer says that she will be a plaintiff in a potential lawsuit against the legislature, and as a Republican, she says her whole party supports the auditor's efforts. One public policy expert explained the potential impact of an audit on the average voter.
"The laws that affect 7 million residents of the commonwealth are largely drafted in secret and behind closed doors. We believe that a comprehensive audit is the way to stop that," said Charlie Chieppo, a senior fellow at the Pioneer Institute.
The Pioneer Law Institute, represented at the press conference, says their organization is prepared to sue the legislature if they continue to block audit efforts. The group says they will be waiting until January to sue when the legislature and the state's election overseer say the ballot law takes effect.
