ROCKVILLE, Md. (DC News Now)- A community is expressing outrage over reports of a racial slur written on a Black student’s desk at Wootton High School on Dec. 2.
Although DC News Now was not allowed to enter the closed-door meeting, which was held from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., we spoke to several people outside who were outraged.
Montgomery County resident Michelle Jawando has four children in county schools. Her husband is also a County Commissioner.
“We need accountability, and we need healing and training, and we need to listen to concerns that young people are saying," said Jawando.

School leaders apologized for the delay in reporting and the response to the incident.
However, Jawando said more needs to be done to prevent racial hatred in schools.
“Montgomery County is a place where we stand up for one another where we build bridges, and we don’t build walls. And what’s happening tonight is how do we build a bridge and how do we change the community and how do we continue to pour into our young people that we are stronger together and this is the beginning of that," said Jawando.
Soon after the incident happened, school officials said discrimination hate and bias would not be tolerated.
Some who attended the meeting are hoping nothing like this will ever happen again.
