MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- After hours of discussion, the Memphis-Shelby County School Board voted to postpone their decision on Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins' future with the district until January. There were times when Tuesday's meeting dissolved into chaos, and even ugly words were exchanged. So many passionate opinions inside this building ultimately led the vote to be delayed until the new year. Dr. Feagins said she didn't even know her job was at stake nor the meeting was taking place until she learned about it from the media. MSCS board postpones vote on Feagins’ future until January During the contentious meeting at MSCS headquarters, tempers flared as parents, teachers and activists gathered to speak in favor of keeping Dr. Feagins on the job. Headquarters was even rushed by a crowd that couldn't make it inside after capacity was met in the meeting room. "This is a public meeting. You will let us in," one person exclaimed. A resolution presented before the board said Dr. Feagins had misled the board, saying the district had paid $1 million for overtime wages for time not worked and that she never provided evidence or clarified comments. The MSCS board presented this resolution as reasons to terminate Dr. Feagins' contract. (MSCS) It also alleged that she accepted a donation of $45,000 without MSCS board approval and that she was dishonest about federal grant funds. Dr. Feagins spoke briefly and defended every action against her and said she would like to respond in writing as well. Following a close 5-4 vote, the board agreed.  "I am content for now that at least we can have a process for just the community to soak this in," school board member Michelle McKissack said. "That if we are having to move on to yet another search that the community can absorb that instead of not go into shock. I think we talk about how we want to do things for children, how is this good for children one week before Christmas?" Parents show mixed-emotions on terminating MSCS Superintendent However, not all members are pleased and want the superintendent replaced. "At this point, we are tired of fibs, we are tired of lying to us, we are tired of all the bull crap that is going on," school board member Towanna Murphy said. "Then she comes forward and makes it look like she's doing the right thing and it's not the right thing because children are being hurt in the process of this." Dr. Feagins left before WREG could get a comment from her. The discussion about Dr. Feagins future will resume on January 14 when a committee meeting is held.
