MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Le Bonheur has treated far too many children for gunshot wounds, and over the past few years, many have come from three zip codes. Some of the wounds were caused by accidents. Others by violence. Le Bonheur reports as of last week, they treated 148 patients for gunshot wounds. That's on top of the 180 patients last year. The children's hospital broke it down even further stating last year between January and September, most of the patients with gunshot wounds came from three zip codes. 22 children were from 38127, which is Frayser 14 children were from 38106, which is the South Memphis area 13 were from 38114, which is Orange Mound This year, Memphis Police Department's homicide tracker shows at least eight more fatally shot in those zip codes Doctor says recent child shootings were preventable "It's just unreal. Heartbroken to see those numbers especially children," Memphis Councilmember Yolanda Cooper-Sutton said. Her district includes all three zip codes. "Makes you really pull back and just kind of rethink what we need to be doing differently in these zip codes," she said. According to the University of Memphis 2023 Poverty Fact Sheet, the three zip codes are majority African American. They have high child poverty rates and rank in the top 10 zip codes for poverty. Federal data also reports households average around a $23,000 median annual income and are mostly single-parent. Le Bonheur reports it treated one or no gunshot wound patients during that same time from zip codes with opposite demographics and earnings. "If we don't deal with poverty and the root causes of it, we're going to continue to see the same thing over and over again," Cooper-Sutton said. City says crime down this year, what will get it to stick? Other county leaders have recently voiced a similar sentiment. "We really need to get a grip on what's happening in some zip codes, and if there are hotspots out there, we need to be able to respond to them and pour resources into those areas," Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris said. He made that call to action back in November when he and the city announced they will be working together. They will use data and consolidate programming to hopefully get more federal funding for public safety.
