KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Another small business in Kansas City was broken into over the weekend.  This time, Teocali Mexican Restaurant, located in the Hospital Hill area, was broken into. Thieves shattered a glass door.  It was the second time thieves targeted the restaurant in just a few months. Lawrence restaurant on video showing employee cutting meat on pavement “It hurts a lot because you worked so hard to get where you are,” said Teocali owner Enrique Gutierrez. The most recent break-in was all caught on camera. “They took a register from one of my POS systems, and then they took a bottle of tequila or a couple of bottles,” Gutierrez explained. “We learned from the last time not to keep money in registers, no money anywhere and no safe.” Teocali was one of multiple businesses broken into on August 5. “Back in August, they broke into, I believe, eight or nine restaurants that same morning. They knew exactly where to go. They went straight to my office and took the safe. I had some money in there, unfortunately,” Gutierrez said. Since the August break-in, Teocali has boosted security, but that still didn’t keep thieves from breaking in this past weekend.  “This time, four people were walking around with guns, which is the scary part because these guys are now walking in with guns,” Gutierrez explained.  The restaurant has been in the same Hospital Hill location since 2006 but never broken into until this year. “We as small businesses work so hard to achieve our ultimate goal, our dream to have our own place. For somebody to break in it’s so violating. I’m infuriated, I’m upset, I’m sad,” Gutierrez said.  What new laws go into effect in Kansas on Jan. 1, 2025? He's not alone; FOX4 has reported on multiple local businesses that were impacted by break-ins this year. Gutierrez would like to see more patrols in the area, especially in the early morning hours when break-ins occur. “I wish we could get more eyes out there and on the streets because small businesses are hurting,” he said. ”It's only a matter of time before we have to put a metal curtain on our doors. But really, what is that going to do? Just draw attention to it being a bad neighborhood, and we don’t want to have to do that.” He has this advice for other small business owners.  “Beef up your security. This time around, they were in here for 60 seconds because that’s all the time they had because the sirens were going off,” Gutierrez explained. “So, beef up security and beef up your cameras.”
