NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — We all love a good Christmas movie. Whether it's throwing bricks at burglars with Kevin in "Home Alone," or stealing Christmas trees from the people of Whoville with the Grinch, these are all light-hearted movies (or at least have light-hearted endings) that make us feel like the holidays are upon us. But what about anti-Christmas movies? For those who have had too much of the festiveness of the holiday, anti-Christmas movies are the opposite of the feel-good movies we associate with this time of year. They're not unlike what the Grinch would watch. According to a new study by HostingAdvice.com, one in three people are bored by the same Christmas movies played each year. Those conducting the study surveyed 3,000 Americans to find out what their favorite anti-Christmas movie is. The top answer in many states throughout the U.S., including North Dakota, is "Gremlins." This movie examines what happens when a Christmas gift goes wrong after a father buys his son an innocent-looking creature that turns deadly. A second movie was later made, and a prequel series recently came out, expanding the franchise. As with many other movies on this list, "Gremlins" takes something commonly associated with holiday cheer and turns it on its head, making it the perfect anti-Christmas film. Coming it at number two is "Krampus," a movie that takes a look at the titular Krampus, a horned, demonic beast said to accompany Santa Claus in ancient European folklore. Krampus punishes children on the naughty list, and in this movie, the beast unleashed his wrath on a child from a dysfunctional family, who lost his holiday spirit. "Krampus," along with many others on the list, is for those who like to veer towards the horror genre during the holiday season. Just like "Gremlins," this movie shows a dark side of the holiday we all know and love (or most of us anyway). The ever-popular "The Silence of the Lambs" film from the early 90s is number three on the list. This film is a psychological thriller in which an FBI trainee interviews serial killer Hannibal Lecter in an effort to catch a new killer named Buffalo Bill. This movie is for crime junkies who can't get enough of watching serial killers, even around the holidays. How to write a holiday rom-com for TV, according to the experts Here is the full list of the top 10 most popular anti-Christmas movies in the country: Most of these movies are either crime-related or straight-up horror, demonstrating how some people's need for blood can't even be quenched on Christmas. This begs the question, are there specific Christmas movies or genres that people are sick of? HostingAdvice's survey looked at which movies North Dakotans think are overplayed on Christmas. 26% of people in the Peace Garden State think "Home Alone" is overplayed, while another 24% said the same about "A Christmas Story." "Elf" and "It's a Wonderful Life" tied with 19% of people thinking each is overplayed, and "The Polar Express" took the remaining 11%. The most tiresome element of classic Christmas movies was found by 34% of people to be that the same movies play every year. 43% feel like Christmas movies have predictable storylines or a lack of variety in their themes, and 23% resented their over-the-top cheeriness (much like the Grinch). 52% feel there aren't enough new Christmas movies being released. All this being said, the longest average uninterrupted movie-watching stretch over the holidays is still four hours and 55 minutes. People might say that they're sick of Christmas movies, but the joyous and tearful moments still probably get them deep down. To read the full study, go to hostingadvice.com.
