MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- There are several efforts happening this week in Montgomery County to provide gifts to families.
Through the Montgomery Housing Partnership's (MHP) annual Angels for Children Toy Drive, there are 22 drop boxes set up throughout the county to collect toys for families in need.
“Our goal is to bring gifts, holiday gifts to the residents that we serve. Those are low and middle-income people and just kind of brighten their holidays,” Ilana Guttin, with the MHP, said.

The toy drive will run until Dec. 20, with various collection locations in the county, including the Cabin John Village. More than 1,000 children will receive a surprise visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.
"We go door to door with volunteers, [delivering] gifts to each house that we serve in the Wheaton area,” said Guttin. “This is a really unique program because we’re able to have that direct contact with people.”
Meanwhile, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) is extending a helping hand to Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina through the collection of toys and winter clothing.
Items can be dropped at MCPD's headquarters, the 5th District Station in Germantown or at the Hyattstown Fire Station until Friday.

MCPD Officer Marcus Dixon said the goal of the drive is to promote community outreach.
“It’s not just about ‘Here’s this present, go take it.’ It’s ‘Hey, how [are] you doing? What’s your name? What school do you go to?” Dixon said. “We have all these commonalities.”
MCPD is also partnering with the Upcounty Hub, focusing on helping families in Upper Montgomery County feel the magic of the holidays.
“It’s just that special bond when that kid says ‘Oh my God,” Dixon said. “Whether it’s Santa or a Toy, that’s truly what the holiday season is all about.”
