COARSEGOLD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians sent a formal letter to President Joe Biden on Tuesday opposing the proposed Range of Light National Monument. The monument, proposed in 2022, would create a national monument on 1.4 million acres between Yosemite National Park and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. ‘It’s a land grab’: Oakhurst residents react to national monument proposal The Tribe claims the government failed to consult with the land's original inhabitants or consider the severe adverse impacts the monument would have on its ancestral lands, traditional practices, and modern economic opportunities. “As the original inhabitants of this land, we hold an enduring connection to the Sierra Nevada, including the areas encompassed by the proposed monument. Our history, culture, and way of life are deeply intertwined with these lands,” said Chairwoman Tracey Hopkins. “Yet, this proposal has moved forward without any meaningful tribal consultation, a fundamental process required by federal law and policy. Our letter to President Biden makes clear, this cannot proceed without tribal voices at the table.” Oakhurst residents rally opposing proposed national monument Tribal members say the government not consulting with the Tribe violates federal obligations as cited in the 2022 White House Memorandum on Tribal Consultation. This highlights clear standards for engaging with Tribal Nations when their lands and communities are affected in governmental processes. “Alternatives such as placing affected lands into trust for Tribal Nations or establishing co-stewardship agreements must be explored to protect our ancestral lands and honor tribal sovereignty,” said Treasurer Elena Sanders. To preserve and protect ancestral lands, culture, and economy, the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians urges federal leaders to engage with affected Tribal Nations before moving forward with any redesignation of territories.
