ANTIOCH, Calif. (KRON) -- For more than two and a half decades, during the holiday season in Antioch, Camby Road has been affectionately known as "Candy Cane Lane." But now, the family who started the main display is moving out of state, making this the final year. Since 1998, during the winter holidays, families driving up Camby Road have been treated to a dazzling display of Christmas lights built around the centerpiece candy cane. Resident Frank Rehm envisioned the display the day he moved his wife and three sons into this house. "I saw the fireplace on the side of our house right here, and I thought, 'boy, that'd be nice to have a big candy cane on that. We'll try to build it.' So, we did," said Rehm. ‘Neurologic hazard’: Group sues over Bay Bridge lights The holiday decor inside the home just as impressive as what is outside. "The tree represents each of the grandchildren," Rehm said, referring to one decoration. "Every year, it just kept growing and growing and growing," he added. Rehm said the neighbors directly across the street began decorating their home like his family did at about the same time years ago. But now, Rehm and his wife Mary have decided to move to Texas in June, making this the final year of Candy Cane Lane. He said both of them are getting older and the two-story house is too big. Crime, he adds, is making the area less safe. New Antioch mayor aims to tackle spike in violent crime "Our neighborhood is perfectly nice -- perfectly safe. But I wouldn't go walk three blocks away at night," he said. Counting down to Christmas, the Rehms continue collecting canned food and boxed goods people drop off that will eventually be donated to local charities, and to soak in the holiday spirit they have helped cultivate over the years -- especially when Santa Claus pays a visit. "Just do a little something and it'll bring a lot of joy to a lot of people," Rehm said. For now, the lights are on daily from 6 p.m. through 9 p.m., until they turn off for the final time on Monday, Dec. 23.
