Park City vision for Brew Pub lot: A Deer Valley gondola, iceskating rink and parking spots
Dec 17, 2024
Someone may eventually be able to park their car where the Brew Pub lot is located along Main Street, practice their pirouettes on an ice-skating rink there, and then board a gondola to carve some turns at Deer Valley Resort.A City Hall-seated committee has crafted an ambitious vision for the future of the Main Street core that calls for significant development, new transportation infrastructure and other improvements designed to ensure the shopping, dining and entertainment strip remains competitive against outlying commercial destinations. The Main Street Area Plan, if fully implemented, would alter the complexion of the commercial core over the next decade. The plan calls for work up and down the street as well as nearby locations along Swede Alley and Marsac Avenue. The Main Street Area Plan Committee report provides a preview of a wide range of potential projects, including the development of hotels and workforce housing. There are possibilities throughout the Main Street core, but the ideas generated for the future of the Brew Pub lot, toward the southern end of the commercial section of the street, have the potential to ultimately become impactful if they are pursued. The committee report, distributed to Mayor Nann Worel and the Park City Council in anticipation of a meeting on Thursday, describes a concept for what is dubbed the Brew Pub Plaza on the land where there is currently a parking lot. The report says a plaza like the one envisioned would attract people to the southern end of Main Street. The recommendation for the land also includes exploring the potential of a gondola route linking the location to Deer Valley.“The Brew Pub parking lot is situated in the prime location at the southern end of Main Street. However, despite its strategic location, it does not offer visitors a compelling destination at the top of Main Street,” the report maintains. The report describes that a bloc of people visiting Main Street — 23% — travel there from Deer Valley and a “gondola between Deer Valley Resort and the Brew Pub Plaza would enable more of these high-value customers to easily reach the street without creating traffic or requiring parking.” It also says a scenario would be developed for the space at the Brew Pub lot land should a gondola link to Deer Valley not materialize. The possibility of a gondola linking Deer Valley to the Main Street core has been one of the highlights over the months of discussions by the committee. The Town Lift provides a link between Main Street and the Park City Mountain slopes, and a route linking Main Street and Deer Valley is seen as something that could become another anchor for the street.Extensive work would be required if the efforts to link Deer Valley and Main Street with a gondola route proceed. Key steps would include crafting an alignment and developing a funding strategy for the construction as well as the long-term operations and maintenance. There could also be discussions about whether a gondola link would be part of a broader traffic-fighting aerial transit network in the Park City area. The Brew Pub Plaza concept also includes amenities and infrastructure other than a gondola. They are:A skating area: The report says ice skating “will draw people to the plaza during the winter season and provide a family-friendly activity on Main Street.” The area would become a gathering space in the summer. A new building is proposed for restrooms and other uses in support of a plaza.
A mining tower: A tower with a frame of timber is described. It would “be visible down Main Street, reinforcing the street’s mining heritage and providing an attraction to draw people up the street,” the report says, adding that a structure “may also be integrated into the gondola station.”
Parking: The report indicates approximately 30 parking spaces could be built underneath a plaza, with a part of the space set aside for ridesharing services and lodging industry shuttles. The City Council meeting on Thursday is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Marsac Building. The elected officials are slated to take public input about the Main Street Area Plan and possibly cast a vote. More information about the meeting is available on the municipal website, parkcity.org.
