HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- In April 1987, a 22-year-old Henrico County woman was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment. Decades later, new evidence has reignited police's efforts to identify the suspect.
In a Dec. 17 press release, the Henrico County Police Division's Cold Case Review Team released what it describes as an "advanced composite" of the suspect in a 1987 rape case.
On April 13, 1987, the unidentified victim reported that, between 2 and 3 p.m., she had been raped at knifepoint inside her apartment in the Colonial Apartments complex, located in the 200 block of Carleigh Court.
According to police, the man who assaulted her watched her throughout the day as she left her apartment. After she returned from an errand, he cut through a screen door to get inside, then raped her.

“We believe this person had committed a violent act like this before,” said Cold Case Detective J. Schihl in the release. “In the late 1980s, there were several serial rapes that had occurred in the Metro-Richmond area.”

The new composite and the previous one drawn up in 1987, shown above, are meant to depict the suspect. The new one intends to represent what the suspect may look like today.
This new composite comes alongside "new evidence gathered in this case due to technological advancements," which police said could not be shared at this time due to "the sensitive nature of this case." However, these developments reportedly generated a "hit" on a new lead -- which led detectives to ask the public for help identifying the suspect.
The suspect is described as a white man who, at the time of the assault, was in his mid-to-late 20s. He had brown hair and "a regular mustache," according to police. He was "stocky," about 5'10" tall and weighed between 170 to 180 pounds.

"During the incident, the victim said the man was wearing a work uniform, similar to one a delivery driver, maintenance worker or utility person may wear," police said.
