County Commission wants end to 'chaos' surrounding MSCS and Superintendent
Dec 17, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A special Memphis-Shelby County School board meeting gets underway Tuesday evening to decide what's next for Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins.
Dr. Feagins has been leading the district for less than a year, replacing Joris Ray who resigned in 2022 with a $480,000 payout.
What has happened since then is what some County Commissioners described as "chaos."
"How many years are our kids going to be in a chaotic situation without leadership? Without stability," Commissioner Mick Wright said. "You had COVID, you had a two-year search, interim (superintendent) and now a cloud over (the) new leader you spent so long trying to find."

Commissioner Wright and other commissioners weighed in as MSCS decides the fate of Dr. Feagins.
"Shame on anybody in this body who has played a part in the potential of us losing our superintendent," Commissioner Britney Thornton said. "It's distasteful and shameful."
A tumultuous two-year search for a superintendent ended this February with the hiring of Dr. Feagins.
The school year started in August and within a month, former and current board members began criticizing Dr. Feagins.
At that time, board member Towanna Murphy agreed that hiring Dr. Feagins was a mistake.

"I agree, and I am going to say that on record because I was one of the constituents that did interview her and I thought that she was an amazing woman from when we first interviewed her," Murphy said.
In recent months, top MSCS administrators, including the superintendent's executive manager and special assistant, have resigned.
That came shortly after the district's executive director of safety and security resigned.
What happens next is in the MSCS board's hands.
