(WFRV) - The Black Bear Litter and Diet Survey is gearing up for its fourth season, and its success is due to the contributions of den reporters, landowners, and land managers in locating bear dens across northern Wisconsin. According to a Facebook post from the Wisconsin Department of National Resources (DNR), these den reports are crucial for the bear research team as they provide information about bear reproduction and cub survival rates. Finding bear dens can be a challenge but the research team says they will continue to seek assistance from the community. Dens can take various forms, such as shallow nests, hollow trees, excavated dens, or debris piles. First case of Chronic Wasting Disease confirmed by Menominee Reservation The DNR reminds the community that if a bear den is located to follow these important tips: Prioritize Safety: Observe your surroundings for tracks, scratch marks, scat, or any damaged vegetation. Stay cautious, especially if there have been recent bear sightings. Record the Location: Use your phone to drop a pin for GPS coordinates, or remember key details about the property location. Take Photos: If possible, capture an image showing the den's position in the landscape.
