Wisconsin DOT updates winter road condition categories
Dec 17, 2024
(WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has revised its winter road condition categories to improve communication about road safety during the state's notoriously unpredictable winter months.
The updated categories include:
Normal
Partially Covered
Completely Covered
Travel Not Advised
No Report

These replace the previous labels of "good," "wet," "slippery," "snow/ice covered," "not advised," and "impassable."
"We continually look for ways to enhance our 511 Wisconsin traveler information service," said WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman. "We’re confident these updated categories will help drivers make informed travel decisions this winter and beyond."
The changes come as part of WisDOT's ongoing efforts to refine the 511 Wisconsin system, which debuted in 2009. The free service provides live updates on road conditions, traffic incidents, and travel advisories for more than 14,000 miles of roadway. Features include live video feeds from hundreds of traffic cameras and up-to-date reports from law enforcement and first responders.
Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan emphasized the importance of the tool, stating, "Our winter weather can make driving dangerous at times. We encourage drivers to plan ahead, watch their speed during inclement weather, and avoid distractions behind the wheel."

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution during winter storms and to avoid unnecessary travel when conditions are hazardous, allowing maintenance crews to work safely.
