RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is providing updates on two 15-year-olds who were killed since this past Sunday.
“Unfortunately I’ve stood behind this podium many times and said a gun is gonna get you in one of two places, in the cemetery or in prison. And that’s what we’re saying in a wild weekend we had this past weekend,” Lott says.
On Sunday, deputies say they responded to Hunting Avenue in Hopkins — where 15-year-old Jayen Gladden was found dead inside the home.
According to Sheriff Lott, the juvenile was killed after a 14-year-old attempted to clear a handgun near the victim, shooting him in the upper body.
“He slides the gun back with his finger on the trigger, and of course when the slide goes back, the gun shoots, hits the 15 year old and kills him. That 15-year-old’s life is gone for absolutely no reason,” says Lott.
According to RCSD, a second 14-year-old had stolen the gun from his parent and brought it to the location.
The first teen faces charges including involuntary manslaughter while the second’s charges include unlawful possession of a handgun.
And on Monday, deputies were dispatched to Quinton Lane in the Clemson Road area after a resident called 911 saying there was a body on their back porch.
Deputies say upon arrival, a 15-year-old victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
A 14-year-old has been taken into custody and charged with murder. Investigators have yet to determine how the teenager obtained the gun.
“You see somebody shot that’s laying there dead that’s 15-years-old and then you go and put the handcuffs on somebody that’s fourteen,” Lott says regarding his deputies having to see more deaths of teenagers recently.
In another unrelated incident this past Friday, Lott says a 17-year-old was also shot near the 300 block of Turkey Farm Road. The victim remains in critical condition and no arrests have been made.
Lott addressed some of the parents in the incidents, saying, “That part is frustrating too and when I talk about slapping people in the face with reality, some of these parents need to be slapped upside the head too by not being a parent.”
The teenagers’ parents don’t currently face any charges according to Lott, but all three incidents remain under investigation.
