Location of new Mississippi River Bridge near Baton Rouge to be chosen in 2025

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The site of the new Mississippi River Bridge won't be selected until mid-2025, according to state transportation officials.
The Capital Area Road and Bridge District talked about funding and stakeholder partnerships for the future construction of the bridge during a Tuesday, Dec. 16 public meeting. Louisiana Department of Development and Transportation Secretary Joe Donahue said the potential spot of the bridge and the cost is up in the air.
The public voiced strong concerns about the location of the site. The final area is in Iberville Parish, with three possible locations between Plaquemine and St. Gabriel. Some residents raised environmental concerns over the area, saying it would have to be built through many wetlands.
"All of those things are typical, particularly in Louisiana, where we have a lot of wetlands and that is just one type of impact that has to be considered in the NEPA process to determine what the best location of the project is going to be," Donahue said.

He said these meetings are important to learn how the community feels about the location, adding that feedback can help officials carefully plan the process and address concerns and possible issues from construction.
One of the goals of this new bridge project is to lessen traffic congestion from the original bridge and surrounding interstates. Donahue said traffic impact will be determined on where you drive but with the new bridge, the possibility of a toll may come into play.
"In order to benefit congestion on I-10. I will say you need to have either a really low toll or no toll to be able to divert some traffic off of the I-10 mainline," he said.
