BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — It is the Christmas season and the new year is right around the corner. This time of year can mean celebrations for some, including family gatherings and time alone enjoying a day off from work. There are many fun ways to celebrate the holidays, including good food and fireworks where they're legal. Local law enforcement, however, is telling anyone wanting to celebrate by firing their gun in the air to skip that particular tradition. What you need to know when buying, popping fireworks in Louisiana "Anyone found firing a gun into the air in Baton Rouge is subject to being arrested," reads a 2021 news release from the Baton Rouge Police Department. The department noted that bullets can fall back to the ground fast enough to injure or kill people and damage property. (Fireworks are also prohibited in East Baton Rouge Parish.) Zachary Police Chief Darryl Lawrence said that partiers should "give some thought to where that bullet is going to land." Anyone caught shooting a gun into the air could be charged with illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities, according to Lonny Cavalier, commander of the Assumption Parish Sheriff Office’s criminal administrative section. Cavalier said it hasn't happened very often in Assumption Parish. If it does and a bullet hits a roof or home, the shooter could be charged with aggravated criminal damage to property, Cavalier said. Lawrence recommended that people "celebrate by enjoying being around family and friends, listening to music and just enjoying the day."
