MONONA, Wis. (WFRV) - In addition to the recent school shooting in Madison and threats made toward schools in Green Bay, police say one man was arrested on Monday after a loaded handgun was found in the parking lot of a Wisconsin high school.
According to a release from the Monona Police Department, officers were notified at 6:51 p.m. of a firearm being found in the parking lot of the Monona Grove High School.

The School Resource Officer, who was on the scene for an after-school event, assisted patrol officers in their response to the parking lot where a loaded 9mm handgun was found and recovered.
After reviewing footage from the school camera systems, the School Resource Officer was said to have identified a suspect seen riding a bike through the area in which the handgun was found.
Officers with the Monona Police Department say they later found the suspect on a bike at East Coldspring Avenue and Jerome Street and he admitted to having the gun and said he was just passing through on his way home.
The suspect was identified as 33-year-old David C. Gassen from Madison who officials state is a convicted felon and was determined to be intoxicated at the time.
Police say they contacted school district administration and determined that Gassen was not connected to the high school or the after-school event.
Gassen was arrested as he was circling his way back to the area after he realized that he had accidentally dropped the gun.
Officials believe that this incident is not connected to the shooting earlier that day at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison and there is no threat to the Monona Grove High School or the school district.

Gassen is said to be cooperating with the investigation into this incident and is currently being held on the following potential charges:
Felon in Possession of a Firearm with a School Grounds Enhancer
Possession of a Firearm while Intoxicated
Misdemeanor Bail Jumping
Police report that Gassen also already had a felony drug conviction on record and has an open case for a 2nd OWI offense.
I am grateful for the swift response by the citizen in immediately reporting this incident. I’m also very appreciative of our strong working relationship with the Monona Grove School District, faculty, parents and students. This relationship, which involves our SRO program and Patrol’s familiarity and access to school grounds, helps keep this community safe.
