FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- Brendan Banfield, the man accused of a double murder in Reston involving his au pair, was indicted on additional charges Monday.
Fairfax County's Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano announced that a grand jury had indicted the 39-year-old with felony child abuse and neglect and felony child cruelty after previously being arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated murder and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony earlier this year.
“Additional information has come to light over the course of our investigation, and we believe these additional charges reflect the events that occurred in the house on that day," Descano stated in a news release.
The charges stem from the double murder involving his wife, 37-year-old Christine Bandfield, and another man, 39-year-old Joseph Ryan, which happened inside the Banfield's home back in February of last year.
Descano said the new indictments reflect Brendan Banfield’s actions on the day of the double murders, which involved his then 4-year-old daughter being present in the home. He said his actions were "criminal in nature."

The couple's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, 24, was also arrested and charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in October 2023 for her involvement in Ryan's death.
What Happened?
On Feb. 24, 2023, officers from the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) found Christine Banfield stabbed inside the couple's home in the 13200 block of Stable Brook Way. She was lying next to Ryan, who had been fatally shot.
She was rushed to the hospital where she died.
According to DC News Now's previous report, Peres Magalhaes worked and lived inside the couple's home, taking care of their young daughter.
Peres Magalhaes’ lawyer told the judge at a bond hearing that on the day of the double murders last year, she was taking the young girl to the zoo.
Her lawyer claimed that during this time, Christine Banfield had invited Ryan to their home for sex after meeting on a fetish website.

Peres Magalhaes forgot the child's lunch at home and went back to get it.
When she did, she said she saw Ryan head into the house. She called Brendan Bandfield, a special agent for the IRS, and he instructed her to wait there and he would come home.
Peres Magalhaes' lawyer said she went into the house with Brendan Banfield, took the child to the basement and "supposedly dialed 911 at that point but didn’t know what to say to the emergency dispatcher, so she hung up," according to DC News Now's previous report.
She then left the basement. Her lawyer said she and Brendan Banfield "heard some sort of interaction" happening between Christine Banfield and Ryan above them.
Brendan Banfield pulled out his service weapon and went into the master bedroom where he saw Ryan holding a knife to his wife's throat.
Ryan allegedly stabbed Christine Banfield's neck multiple times, prompting her husband to shoot him in the head but it didn't instantly kill him.
Peres Magalhaes said she then grabbed a gun from a safe in the bathroom. She said Ryan started "flailing around or posed a threat of some sort, possibly moving to get up off the ground," which prompted her to fatally shoot him in the heart.
The Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office contends that Peres Magalhaes and Brendan Banfield had an affair and that he did not go to work that day like he claimed to have.
In court, prosecutors argued that the fetish account was set up for Christine Banfield and that Ryan had responded to it. They argued that it was part of an elaborate plan to cut out Christine Banfield so her husband and Peres Magalhaes could be together.
Juliana Peres Magalhaes entered a guilty plea Tuesday to a reduced charge of manslaughter in connection with the February 2023 of Joseph Ryan. She's expected to testify against Brendan Banfield, left, who's also charged with Ryan's death, and the murder of his wife, Christine Banfield.
Pictures shared in court showed Peres Magalhaes’ room and closet which were emptied out and that her clothes were hanging in Brendan Banfield's closet instead. Additionally, there were pictures of them both together on his nightstand and dresser.
Peres Magalhaes’ lawyer admitted to the pair having a sexual relationship but said it wasn't exclusive as she had "many relationships."

Brendan Banfield’s trial date is currently set for Feb. 3, 2025.
