NEWTON, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Newton Police Department is still investigating the incident that led to a school bus being evacuated on Friday. Someone punctured a can of Axe body spray, and the fumes forced the bus driver to pull over and get the children off the bus. The bus stopped on South Kansas Avenue near Southeast 14th Street. The City of Newton initially believed 64 students were evacuated, but only 37 students were on the bus at the time of the incident. According to the City, the driver told the students to stay with the bus, but most of the kids scattered. Only 7-8 students stayed, and they were taken home on the bus. The others walked home, were picked up by police, or got other rides. All made it home safely. DOE says it will no longer pursue transmission corridor in Kansas There is video footage from the bus. The police department is in the process of obtaining it and audio evidence. Investigators are also interviewing the bus driver and each student. “We understand parents’ frustration,” Chief Craig Dunlavy said in a news release on Monday. “We all want to know exactly what happened, but this will take some time to investigate thoroughly, especially with so many juveniles involved." “Our primary focus on Friday was for the safety of all the kids. Now we have time to have more in-depth conversations and examination of the evidence. We’re investigating this like any other potentially criminal act,” he continued. Dunlavy credits Walmart staff for helping to round up children who went to the store. Store staff helped gather the kids at customer service to be taken home. USD 373 said that the investigation is ongoing and that the school district will reach out to the families impacted by the incident regarding potential witness interviews.
