New skilled trade building coming to GTCC"s High Point campus

HIGH PIONT, N.C. (WGHP) --- Construction, HVAC and other skilled trades will soon have training available in High Point.
Guilford Technical Community College plans to open up a new skilled trade building on its campus. Right now, it’s known as the Johnson Building and serves as a storage space on campus. It is piled high with boxes. In the coming weeks, it will be cleared out and ready for new life.
“There is no time to waste, so we will get started very, very soon,” said Dr. Anthony Clarke, the president at GTCC.
The demand for skilled positions is high across the Triad.
GTCC jumped at the opportunity to help fund the project. The Southwest Renewal Foundation in High Point received $18.5 million from the Environmental Protection Agency, and $5 million of that will go to GTCC.
“We couldn’t bring jobs per se, but we could bring jobs training. The idea was to improve the vitality of the campus because we do have other programs there,” Clarke said.
The inside of the old sock factory will be made into four bays, and each will have a different training focus. GTCC leaders are in talks with area employers to see which ones would be most beneficial.
“It is bringing training to ... South Main Street where we are located ... Hopefully, we can bring some jobs to that area,” Clarke said.
Once up and running, they hope to train 75 students a year. There will be a full-time career navigator to help students land jobs after graduation.
“It is very exciting,” Clarke said.
The grant money will not only fund the entire renovation project, but there are some leftover funds that will be used to purchase two electric vans.
“Many of our students have transportation challenges as far as getting to campus,” Clarke said.
The school is still working out the final details and hopes the project will help transform the future of South High Point.
“If we project $40,000 a job that is about a $3 million impact,” Clarke said.
We won’t see too many changes to the outside of the building, but the entrance will be in a different spot.
GTCC expects the funds to come through in the next month or two, and they will start construction right away. It’s expected to take two years to complete.
