New school zone speed cameras in effect along Belair Road
Dec 16, 2024
Baltimore City motorists should take note: a new automated speed enforcement location is now in action between the block ranges of 3700 – 4800 Belair Road, the Baltimore City Department of Transportation announced. The new speed enforcement location is intended to encourage safer driving around The Green School of Baltimore and the Belair-Edison School. The new automated speed enforcement location is part of the city’s Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES). It’s designed to promote safe driving by reducing driver speeds in school zones throughout the city. The monitoring system consists of portable and fixed cameras that detect vehicles driving at least 12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. The speed cameras operate in Baltimore City school zones on Mondays through Fridays, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the year. Drivers caught speeding past the cameras will be fined $40 per violation; the driver is not assessed any license points. The city has recorded the deaths of at least four pedestrians who were struck by cars along Belair Road in the past few weeks, including one who was hit within the new speed enforcement location prior to its implementation. The school zones have cameras operating in multiple directions to protect drivers and pedestrians. The block ranges listed above are approximations for the ATVES, as enforcement at all locations may be on a temporary, rotating, or permanent basis.
