COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) -- Suspicious mail received at the suburban Columbus home of Secretary of State Frank LaRose prompted a response from local, state and federal authorities. A piece of mail that LaRose opened contained "a powdery substance and written material of a threatening nature," LaRose spokesperson Dan Lusheck is quoted in a Monday news release. Numerous law enforcement agencies responded to the home late Sunday, according to the release. Ohio drone sightings among many causing national concern “After coming into contact with the contents of the letter, the secretary notified his security staff and took appropriate actions to protect his family from any immediate harm," Lusheck said. "At the request of local authorities, multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agents responded to the secretary’s home, including hazmat and bomb detection units. The suspicious materials were collected for further investigation, and the secretary and his family are safe. The incident remains under active investigation.” LaRose has in recent months received "numerous personal threats of physical harm," reads the release. He now has increased security. LaRose's office was one of more than a dozen elections offices nationwide that received suspicious packages ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, FOX 8 sister station WKBN reported in September. Mike DeWine, LaRose received security consultation and personal protection from the Department of Public Safety and State Highway Patrol in the weeks leading up to the election, according to the release. Ohioans in the Nov. 5 election voted down Issue 1, a constitutional amendment that would have reformed the state's legislative redistricting process.
