Man making $5 donation finds $6,000 charge on credit card in Manhattan

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Police in Manhattan are warning locals to be aware of scams circulating in the local area after a man was reportedly charged thousands of dollars to his credit card when thinking he was donating to a charity organization.
The Riley County Police Department (RCPD) reported on Monday, Dec. 16 that a theft occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 in the 500 block of Richards Drive. A 30-year-old man agreed to donate $5 to a charity organization but ended up finding he was charged $6,000 on his card.
RCPD spokeswoman Ashley Tokoi said this is the first time a report has been made for this type of scam in the community. However, police regularly remind residents to remain vigilant of different types of scams and report them to law enforcement.

Police are still investigating this recent scam. Anyone who has information to share with police can use Manhattan Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous and possibly earn a $1,000 reward.
