PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WLNE) — Fire investigators discovered smoking materials and medical oxygen equipment at the scene of a fatal School Street fire that occurred Friday, according to the multiple officials. “Smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires in Massachusetts and across the country,” said Plainville Fire Chief Robert Skinner. “We want to remind all our residents that there’s no truly safe way to smoke, and that smoking around home oxygen is especially dangerous.” According to State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine, the Plainville fire is the fifth Massachusetts incident in 2024 where smoking materials and medical oxygen equipment were found on scene. In the past five years, six Massachusetts residents have died in such fires. Mark Beyersdorfer, 68, died in Friday’s fire that was reported around 3 p.m. The fire was quickly extinguished by local fire crews, as well as mutual aid from surrounding departments. The official cause of the fire is still being investigated by Plainville police and fire, along with Massachusetts State Police personnel.   Categories: Massachusetts, News
