EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — The fire at the Brookside Terrace apartments in East Greenwich that displaced more than 40 people has been ruled accidental. According to the state fire marshal's office, the fire was caused by a malfunction with a rooftop HVAC unit. BACKGROUND: Fire damages East Greenwich apartment building The fire reportedly burned through the roof and into a stairwell and two apartments on the third floor. An East Greenwich fire official at the scene told 12 News that 24 units were damaged, but not all of them were occupied. One person was hurt and received treatment on scene.
