A Valparaiso man was killed Saturday night when his vehicle struck a tree head-on in Liberty Township. Around 6:10 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a single-vehicle crash near County Road 50 East and County Road 1050 North, according to a Porter County Sheriff’s Department release. When officers responded to the scene, they found a 67-year-old man inside his Chevrolet HHR, which struck a tree. The man was declared dead at the scene. The driver was identified as Eric J. La Brie, 67, the release stated. Police determined from their initial investigation that the 2010 Chevrolet HHR was traveling south on County Road 50 E, then for an unknown reason, left the roadway and struck a tree on the south side of CR 1050 N. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved, police said.
