BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) - This year, over 28,000 headstones at Beaufort National Cemetery were decorated with holiday wreaths, each one honoring a fallen hero who served our country. The wreaths, laid with love and respect, reminding us of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women, especially during the holiday season. The day was filled with emotion as thousands of people came together to lay wreaths at the graves. It wasn’t just about the wreaths – it was a moment to remember and thank those who gave everything for our freedom. “From the moment I got here, from the time the motorcycle started coming in, I just was so built up with tears and ready to just thank the world for the blessings that these soldiers have done,” said one visitor. The wreath-laying at Beaufort National Cemetery is part of a nationwide effort called Wreaths Across America. This organization was founded in 2007 with the mission to remember, honor, and teach about the sacrifices made by military veterans. Each year, on National Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers across the country lay wreaths at veterans' graves to ensure that their memory lives on. “It’s a sense of pride and appreciation for all those who served before us,” said one person. Someone else shared, “There’s probably no better sign of America than to be here. And that to all our heroes and their spouses.” For many, laying the wreath was a way to give back and show gratitude to those who served. People traveled from all over to see the beautiful wreaths across the cemetery. Some were visiting for the first time, others had family members buried there. Many came to honor their loved ones. “Both of our dads are veterans, and it’s just very meaningful to lay the wreath and say to yourself, thank you for your service,” one woman shared. Another said, “My mother was Air Force, my children’s father was Air Force, my husband’s Army, and it was just a blessing to be able to be a part of this.” For these families, laying a wreath was a personal way to honor their loved ones’ service. And as people walked through the cemetery, many felt a deep connection to those who gave their lives for our country. “I think they’re smiling down every day, to be honest. Like today. They’re definitely with us for sure,” one person said, reflecting on how their loved ones would feel about the tribute. This year, wreaths were laid in many cemeteries across the country, but for many at Beaufort, it was more than just a one-time event. Most said they would return next year to continue the tradition of honoring our heroes. “I’ll be back next year to do it all over again,” one visitor said. For everyone who participated, the act of laying a wreath was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military heroes. Now, it’s a tradition that will continue to honor their legacy for years to come.
