PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- Portsmouth firefighters responded to a house fire early Sunday morning. One of those first responders was taken to the hospital, but is expected to recover. Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Portsmouth Fire-Rescue crews said they responded to a multifamily structure fire on Calvin Street. When they got to the location, they saw a single-story multiplex with smoke and flames coming from an end unit. Two of the three units were unoccupied. Crews said an adult and a child were able to get out safely. An official with the fire department said one firefighter was taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
