Volunteers unite to help Army veteran in Rincon

RINCON, Ga. (WSAV) - Dozens of volunteers gathered in Rincon to serve Army veteran Matt Watters transforming his yard into a space he and his family can enjoy for years to come.
“It’s the least I can do for a friend and a soldier,” said Chandler Joyner, a volunteer and coworker of Watters.
The effort was organized by Homes for Our Troops, a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans.
“It was a weird thing to do at first because I’m like, who am I to deserve this?” Watters said. “That is such a good feeling that there’s still this America out here where folks come out and volunteer their time for someone they don’t even know.”

Watters typically uses a prosthetic leg after sustaining injuries overseas. He said he recently found it too painful to wear, so he reached out.
“That’s kinda why this organization exists,” he said. “Your handicap can jump up and bite you at any time.”
Among the volunteers were Watters’ coworkers, who spent their Saturday lending a hand. Joyner said it was an opportunity to give back to someone who had made an impact on his life.
“I saw a good guy, and I try to keep those people around in my life,” Joyner said. “So I do everything I can to make sure they have a good life too.”
“Not a day goes by where I’m not grateful for what they’re doing for us,” Joyner said.
Homes for Our Troops leaders say they also give away about 20-30 homes to veterans every year.
