Travis Hunter was named the 90th winner of the Heisman Trophy during a ceremony in New York on Saturday night. Here’s a look at key numbers behind the wideout/cornerback’s campaign for college football’s most prestigious award. 9-3 If CU doesn’t turn in a strong record, Hunter probably isn’t in consideration. Only three previous Heisman winners played on teams with four or more regular season losses, and none since Oklahoma running back Steve Owens in 1969. Of the other 89 winners, only 12 won the trophy on a team with three regular-season losses, including LSU QB Jayden Daniels last year. RELATED: 2024 Heisman Trophy voting results: How much did Travis Hunter win by? 7 The number of 100-yard receiving games for Hunter this season, a CU record. That included four straight to start the season, a career-high 153 yards against Cincinnati, and then a pair of 100-yard games to close the year against Kansas and Oklahoma State. 14 Hunter’s touchdown receptions, which is a CU single-season record, breaking Nelson Spruce’s previous mark of 12 set in 2014. Hunter posted five games with multiple receiving touchdowns and had at least one TD catch in seven of CU’s 12 games. 1,152 Hunter’s total receiving yards this year, the fifth-most in school history. That tally ranked him sixth in FBS despite Hunter sharing targets with other top CU wideouts like LaJohntay Wester (880 yards) and Will Sheppard (617). 1937 Hunter entered rare Boulder air this year, accomplishing a feat that hadn’t been seen in CU history in 87 years. He became the first player in CU history with more than 1,000 yards on offense and four interceptions on defense since Heisman finalist Byron “Whizzer” White. 19.2 The average yardage of Hunter’s 15 total touchdowns this fall (he also had a rushing TD). That set a new CU single-season record (minimum 15 TDs). Hunter also averaged 12.5 yards per catch overall. 1996 In CU’s regular-season finale vs. Oklahoma State, Hunter became the first collegian to score three TDs and nab a pick in one game in at least 28 years (likely much longer). Hunter had 3 TDs on 10 catches for 116 yards and a pick; no player’s done that since such data became available. No. 1? No cornerback has ever been selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft, but Hunter’s two-way abilities, his speed and his freakishly good ball skills give him a chance to make history in April. His teammate, QB Shedeur Sanders, also has a solid chance to go No. 1 considering his premium position. Hunter wouldn’t be a Heisman finalist without Sanders, the Unitas Golden Arm Award winner.
