BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A holiday tradition that began decades ago in a southwest Bakersfield neighborhood is back. Dustin's Diner officially opened for business Friday, Dec. 13. This marks the 30th year Dustin's Diner has been serving up holiday treats and good cheer from the Haggin Oaks neighborhood. The annual Christmas fundraiser was started by brothers Dustin and David Kilpatrick who sold hot chocolate and other treats to families who came to see the decorated homes. More than 30 children removed from their homes wait for the Wishmas Tree Since they moved away, neighbors have taken over the labor of love. "It started with just a couple of parents helping out and baking nonstop, now we are able to bake our cookies in the kitchen at the Open Door Network and again, everything is donated...it's become a really big neighborhood group effort," said Kim Mishkind. Dustin's Diner runs through Dec. 22 and is open Fridays and Saturdays. from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The diner is also open Thursdays and Sundays, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It's located at 2301 Haggin Oaks Blvd. Since its inception the diner has raised more than $300,000 the Bakersfield Homeless Center which is now The Open Door Network.
