RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Wreaths Across America held a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Richmond National Cemetery on Saturday, offering residents the opportunity to honor fallen veterans. Starting at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14, people gathered at Richmond National Cemetery to lay wreaths as part of Wreaths Across America's three pillars -- remembering the fallen, honoring those that have served and teaching children the value of freedom. Each wreath cost $17, and according to people involved with the event, enough wreaths were collected to cover 2900 headstones out of the 6500 they have in the cemetery. 8News spoke with Michael Imperio and Shelby Tilton -- the outgoing and incoming directors respectively of the Wreaths Across America Richmond National Cemetery chapter -- about the importance of an event like this. "Freedom isn't free," Tilton said. "If it wasn't for these soldiers fighting every day and serving our military, we would not have the freedoms that we have today."
