SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Local police have scheduled driving under the influence checkpoints in both North and East County this month, a move meant to promote public safety by taking impaired drivers off the roads.
North County
Officers with the Carlsbad Police Department (CPD) will be holding a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 to 2 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. It will be conducted at an undisclosed location within the city. As explained by the department, DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said CPD Lt. Alonso DeVelasco. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The department also reminded drivers that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and medicinal drugs like marijuana could also interfere with driving capabilities.
East County
Officers with the El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) are planning to conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, Dec. 20 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the 300 Block of W. Chase. Also, the department will have additional officers on patrol ahead of the holidays to crack down on potential DUI drivers.
"Drunk driving continues to be a factor in fatal traffic crashes in the United States, especially during the holidays. During the 2018-2022 December months, there were 4,759 people killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In California, there were 1,479 people killed in alcohol-impaired traffic crashes in 2022," officials with ECPD noted in a recent news release.
If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, ECPD suggests to plan ahead for a sober ride. Also, if you see someone who appears to be driving while impaired, police have encouraged the public to call 911.
