SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - The Eastern Wharf is quickly becoming one of the Savannah’s most buzzed about communities. Part of downtown Savannah does not get a lot of foot traffic, but there are big plans in the works for the Eastern Wharf community. Developers are calling this the “next big thing”. Since 2017, the 55-acre community has grown immensely with apartments, condos, a hotel along with shops and places to eat. “Our retail offerings are continuing to grow and expand,” Ian Smith, Co-founder of Mariner Group and developer said. "We have a steakhouse coming later in the year and also a local restaurant will be expanding out here later in the year as well." Smith told News 3 one of their biggest accomplishments has been connecting the area to River Street, which has brought in more money and visitors. He said this is benefitting the city overall. We’re told ‘Stevedore Bakery’ has been feeling the effects of the expansion. “When we first opened, there really wasn't anything here,” Amy Hosking, Stevedor Bakery’s pastry chef said. “Like the apartment building in the back there that just opened. The foot traffic was nothing. We weren't even connected to River Street yet. And since then, it's we've just seen so many people come in, people moving in with the condos. It has been fantastic.” Smith said as the city of Savannah continues to grow, they will strive to cater to its new neighbors. He said Forsyth Park has been a regular part of Savannahian’s daily lives and that’s their goal at the end of this. “When we first started this project,  our philosophy was we want to build this first Savannah, and the tourists will find it,” Smith explained. “But we want to make sure that Savannah and come here and experience what we do out here and enjoy it.” “I think it's really exciting to be on the ground floor of this because we are one of the first businesses to have opened here in general and we like to watch it grow and see all these people,” Hosking said. “It's been absolutely amazing and such a learning experience as well.”
