FORECAST: Mostly sunny, breezy and chilly Thursday
Dec 11, 2024
We've already had nasty conditions this morning, which won't change through the afternoon. Steady rain has been coming down in waves since last night, making for great sleeping weather but not ideal conditions if you have to be in it. More rain is on the way as the cold front with this system passes through, with steady to heavy rain possible through 6-7 PM before it dries out. We've already picked up around an inch of rain across the area, with higher amounts around an inch and a half along the I-81 corridor. Most of this rain is soaking into the drought-stricken ground, but we'll still need to watch for minor flooding problems until the rain ends.
Winds are already picking up, and it will get more blustery behind the front tonight. Wind Advisories are in place across the mountains, where gusts could hit 50 mph. There are no additional advisories elsewhere in the DMV, but gusts could still hit 30-40 mph. With the wet ground, some down trees and power lines can't be ruled out. This wind will usher in much colder air as temperatures fall from the 50s and 60s this afternoon to the 20s and 30s by Thursday morning. As it gets colder in the mountains, rain will briefly flip to snow, accumulating a few inches and making conditions slick. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for Garrett County for this wintry weather.
Breezy winds will continue into Thursday, and with it being much colder, there will be some frigid wind chills to deal with. It will feel like it's in the teens and 20s early tomorrow morning and won't feel much warmer throughout the day. Friday will be equally chilly, but the wind should finally let up, with sunny skies under high pressure settling in.
Calmer conditions will remain into the weekend, with temperatures in the 40s on Saturday. Clouds will return in the afternoon as the next storm system approaches. Precipitation will start Saturday night, and where it's coldest across the mountains, there is likely to be a wintry mix on Sunday morning. This will quickly turn to rain and spread east throughout the day as a warm front passes by and gives us a soggy end to the weekend. Unsettled and warmer conditions will continue through at least next Tuesday before the next wave of colder air arrives during the middle of next week.
