ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Wednesday, Sen. Jeremy Cooney hosted his annual year-end Community Awards ceremony. It celebrated local leaders and businesses in the Greater Rochester Area.
There are three types of awards given out: the empire awards, commendations and proclamations.
Also included as an honoree: Colonel Nancy Bird, Cooney's inductee this year for the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Colonel Bird served in the U.S. Army for 40 years, playing a pivitol role for women in the armed services.
Cooney said the holiday season is the perfect time to take a moment and reflect on the important work folks have done for the community.

"It's important we take a pause from the busy shopping season or preparations for the holidays with our families and just come together and tell their stories. So, this is not a time for politicians to talk about themselves, it's our time to be able to recognize community members who are doing great things so we can give them their moment on the stage," said Cooney. "We call them up, we talk about them, they get to share a couple of comments, and they get to do that in front of their family and friends."
The Community Awards ceremony is now in its third year.
