VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It happened on 24th St. near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, but any street in the Hampton Roads area could have been the target. Around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were alerted to the 900 block, where residents reported someone was breaking into cars. VBPD: 4 arrested in VB after reports of car break-ins on 24th St. Officers responded and pulled over a suspicious vehicle. During a search, police found three guns — including one that was reported as stolen — a stolen credit card, illegal drugs and tools used for burglary. Four local men — Jawan Burnell, Khalik Perry, Jermaine Vaughan and Amard White — were taken into custody on drug, firearm, possession of burglary tools, grand larceny, credit card theft and destruction of property charges. From the resort region to the suburbs of Virginia Beach, police are trying to get ahead of criminals, whose inventory sometimes ends up in children's hands. Earlier this year, Police Chief Paul Neudigate warned that what's stolen from homes today could end up for sale on social media tomorrow. Over half of VB murders so far this year have ties to Renaissance Academy, Chief Neudigate says "If I gave you a presentation and I showed you some of the Instagram posts that we see on the daily of young people in Virginia Beach with guns, with guns that rival the quality and caliber of what our officers carry, many times with high-capacity magazines, it's quite disconcerting," Neudigate said. The problem is regional and cars aren't the only targets. Days before Christmas last year, a gun safe, weighing about 700 pounds was stolen from a Portsmouth home, according to court records. The safe contained 50 firearms. The next day, one of the victim's weapons, a 16-gauge shotgun, was recovered from an unidentified man. There is concern gun thefts could increase over the next few weeks as some law-abiding residents may get new guns as presents for the holiday season.
