Virginia man fears deportation under Trump administration
Dec 11, 2024
FAIRFAX, Va. (DC News Now) —A Virginia man says he is fearful of the mass deportations expected to come as Donald Trump returns to the White House.
The man fled El Salvador and gained asylum in the U.S. but is worried he will be deported. He told DC News Now he fled El Salvador because of LGBTQ+ violence.
The man says he came to the United States seeking a better and safer life but instead, he says he feels less safe.
“[It's'] heartbreaking and I’m trying to make some conciseness about that situation because I know it’s coming,” said the man.

The man is so afraid of the looming threat of deportation under the Trump administration that he didn’t feel safe to release his identity.
He says he was harassed and attacked in his home country of El Salvador because of being gay.
“They beat us up, you know, it was long ago so it was kind of hard for me to tell you,” he said. “I got bruises all over my body, but it was hard. Because we were gay and that was the only reason why.”
He settled in Virginia but got a DUI that landed him in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
While in custody, the nonprofit, Amica Center for Immigration Rights helped him win his asylum case.
“Not only was he afraid to return to his home country because of who he was but also because in his home country, people like him are persecuted,” said Michael Lukens with Amica Center for Immigrant Rights who represented the man.
Amica is gearing up its lawyers to fight the incoming administration and hold “know your rights” workshops to help other immigrants.
“Day one comes, President Trump does X, somebody’s ready to sue the next day, so we’re already working on that,” said Lukens.
Amica is also pushing the White House to expand temporary protective statuses for more immigrants before the presidential inauguration on January 20th.
