LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A family in Lexington is looking for answers after they claim their elementary-aged child has suffered months of bullying at Arlington Elementary, culminating in injuries, including a broken arm.
Harry Dawes Jr., the father of the injured student, says the incident has been ongoing, with his child returning home with bruises.
“I’ve been fighting this going backwards and forwards from work just to pick my son up because he’s getting bullied at the school,” said Dawes.
He shared that at one point, he felt unsafe sending his son to class.
“I said, ‘No, I’m not sending my kid back to school because he’s been bullied, because they’ve been taking his lunch and everything,'” said Dawes.
The situation escalated when his son came home with a more severe injury.
“I took him from school. I took him straight to Central Baptist Hospital and found out that, oh, he had a broken arm,” said Dawes.
A student accident report provided by the family lists the injury as a ‘contusion with a possible fracture,’ stating the child fell. However, the parents claim their son told them he was pushed by another student.
In response to the incident, Fayette County Public Schools sent ABC 36 a statement emphasizing their commitment to student safety.
“While we do not comment on individual student incidents, FCPS is committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment where every student can thrive. We take bullying seriously and work diligently to prevent it, fostering a learning environment where all students feel supported and respected.”
The Dawes family says their son was suspended for five days and is now calling for greater accountability and disciplinary action against those they say are responsible.
