Clay County porch pirate suspect arrested in Independence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 41-year-old Excelsior Springs man is in custody following a string of package thefts that took place in the Northland over Thanksgiving weekend.
Clay County prosecutors have charged Mathew Robinson with one count of felony theft and one count of felony possession of a controlled substance.

His accomplice, Kayley Worthington, 24, is also facing these charges. She was arrested Monday, Dec. 2.
After seeing multiple reports on social media two weeks ago of packages being stolen in Liberty, Smithville, and Kansas City, North, the sheriff’s office and the police departments in those cities are working to identify the thieves.
Their investigation led them to a home in Excelsior Springs on Monday evening, where they found Worthington and took her into custody.
Robinson was at the home but managed to escape. Deputies served a search warrant at the house and recovered 51 stolen items, as well as methamphetamine.
The sheriff's office announced on Wednesday, Dec. 11, Robinson was located and arrested in Independence.

According to court documents, nine victims identified 22 of the items as being stolen from the porches of their residences. An approximate monetary value of all items is $2,368.
