WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The FBI says it's investigating dozens of mysterious drones spotted in New Jersey. Witnesses say they've seen them above military bases and even flying near President-elect Donald Trump's golf course. Both the FBI and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy say they don't think the drones pose safety concerns, but they don’t know for sure. The FBI assistant director told Congress he doesn't know who's flying these mystery drones over New Jersey. “People are looking at us and they think that we're lying to them, because they think how could you possibly not have answers to drones flying over some of the most critical airspace in the country,” said Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-N.Y.). The FBI says it's investigating clusters of drones that have flown near a U.S. military research facility and President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. “That's madness that we don't know what these drones are,” said Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas.). The White House says President Joe Biden is aware of the reports. “The fact that we don't know what they are, who's behind them or what they're doing, is very concerning to me. Particularly in a post-Chinese spy balloon world,” said Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). In February of 2023 the U.S. military shot down a Chinese spy balloon off the South Carolina coast and last December the Pentagon says a number of unauthorized drones flew over an air force base and the area that houses Seal Team Six in Virginia. “There's huge potential and current use for drones. We just want to make sure they're used safely and for the right purposes,” said Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.). The Department of Justice says it's illegal right now to destroy an aircraft in flight.  They asked Congress for more authority to do it.
