Jets mailbag: What should fans ask Santa for after a nightmare 2024 season?
Dec 11, 2024
Another week, another loss the Jets are trying to put behind them.
After a brutal overtime loss to the Dolphins last Sunday, the Jets are 3-10 and are officially eliminated from playoff contention for the 14th consecutive year. While the Jets will be at home for the postseason again, they still have four games remaining in the 2024 season.
Gang Green has clearly made the naughty this year, but it is time to answer some questions in this week’s mailbag.
After putting up with this nightmare of a season so far, what should Jets fans ask from Santa this year? — @MrED315
Jets fans should ask Santa Claus for many things this Christmas. However, the people asking for an ownership change, don’t appear to be getting their wish.
With owner Woody Johnson leading the general manager and coaching hires, the Jets need to find candidates who can help them eliminate the loser gene that wide receiver Garrett Wilson said the team might have during his postgame press conference on Sunday.
Johnson should hire Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew as the Jets general manager. Agnew played in the NFL for 11 seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 1999. His son, Ray Agnew III, is also a scout in the Jets organization.
Johnson should then allow Agnew to hire whatever coach he wants. The Jets need a coach who is a leader of men and someone who can build a culture because they need an organization enema.
Coaches who I would like to see with the Jets include former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, or Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
During the last 14 seasons, the Jets have been on Santa’s naughty list. They are long overdue for someone to pull them from that dark abyss and place them on the nice list for once.
Will the Jets get this hire right and hire a GM first and allow him to hire the HC? — @FranS3837
I believe that since Johnson is getting advice from The 33rd Team, the Jets will hire a general manager before hiring a coach. In 2019, the Jets did the complete opposite, which many Jets fans remember.
After firing Todd Bowles in 2018, the Jets hired Adam Gase as their coach. Months later, they fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and replaced him with Joe Douglas, whom Johnson fired last month after five-plus seasons.
It’s usually common practice to hire a general manager before hiring a coach when a team has both vacancies. But this is the Jets, and Johnson is unpredictable, so who knows what the team does.
Do you expect a full teardown and rebuild this offseason? — @jetoffensive
That depends on what you mean by a complete teardown and rebuild.
I believe the Jets will sell candidates on the young foundation of their team. That includes cornerback Sauce Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, running back Breece Hall, tackle Olu Fashanu, and edge rushers Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald.
However, the next general manager will have some tough decisions to make, including whether to bring back Aaron Rodgers after this disastrous season. In addition, Gardner, Wilson, Hall, and Johnson will be up for contract extensions.
Gardner and Wilson will likely have their fifth-year options exercised, giving the Jets some added protection. Because he was a second-round pick, Hall doesn’t have that luxury, so the Jets’ next general manager will need to decide whether they are interested in extending him or comfortable letting him go into 2025, the final year of his contract.
Johnson is interesting because the Jets can pick up his fifth-year option. But after one of three good years in the league and him coming off an Achilles injury, the Jets could decide to decline the option, which is estimated at around $14.7 million, according to Over The Cap.
Ultimately, for anyone who is not a centerpiece player, I expect the Jets to move on from next offseason.
Is Josh McCown a legitimate HC candidate? — @jetscap
For those who don’t know, McCown, who played for the Jets from 2017-18, is currently the Vikings’ quarterbacks coach. Many have credited him with Sam Darnold‘s turnaround this season.
Darnold has thrown for 3,299 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 13 games. I don’t know if McCown is ready to be a head coaching candidate yet, but if Flores were to take the Jets coaching job, McCown might become the offensive coordinator.
Also, Darnold is set to be a free agent following the 2024 season. I’m unsure if a Jets reunion is in the works, but maybe having Flores and/or McCown on the coaching staff could convince Darnold to give it another go with the Jets.
