PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Tiverton man will serve life in state prison for a 2022 shooting murder inside of a Newport bar, according to the office of Attorney General Peter F. Neronha.
Shamik Steele, 33, pleaded guilty December 2 in Providence Superior Court to one count of second-degree murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of felony assault.
He was sentenced to serve life plus five years at the ACI.
The incident occurred on February 14, 2022, when Newport police were called to Friendly Sons of Newport for reports of a shooting.
Steele and two friends were drinking at the bar, left, and returned later when Steele walked in and fired several shots.
The victim, 25-year-old Yordi Arevalo, was struck four times and Steele fled on foot, according to witness testimony.
Steele was identified via surveillance footage and positively identified by detectives, having encountered him previously.
A witness also described the shooter as having a neck tattoo of Jesus Christ, matching Steele’s own neck tattoo.
