FORECAST: Rain is Thanksgiving morning, with gradual clearing by afternoon
Nov 27, 2024
Clear skies gave way to chilly temperatures this morning, but it's quickly gone from clear to cloudy this afternoon. A wave of grey has spread across the DMV and is here to stay. After some sunshine warmed us back into the low to mid-50s, we won't see temperatures rise much more because of the cloud cover. Despite looking like it will rain, soggy conditions will hold off until tonight. Any plans or last-minute errands you have on this Thanksgiving Eve shouldn't be interrupted by the weather. Showers will arrive around midnight, turning to a steadier rain in the early morning hours with patchy fog mixed in.
We've put a DMV First Warn in place for Thanksgiving morning, as the heaviest rain falls from roughly 5 to 9 AM. The rain will slow down anyone traveling during this time, but it shouldn't cause any other significant issues. With the ongoing drought, the half-inch-to-inch totals from this storm system will be soaked up nicely. Only a few showers will remain by the afternoon as it starts to dry out quickly for dinner time. We'll be able to enjoy the rest of the holiday with no weather concerns, but heading into the rest of the holiday weekend, our attention will turn to the wind and frigid cold stretch coming up.
Gusty northwest winds will take hold on Friday, producing 30-40 mph gusts at times, especially across the higher terrain. These stronger winds will kick off the temperature tumble, though we won't feel a significant difference until Friday night. Overnight lows will fall into the teens and 20s, with wind chills in the single digits across the mountains and teens in the lower terrain to the east. High temperatures won't be able to escape the 30s for most locations beginning on Saturday, and this trend will continue well into next week. Other than some mountain snow showers, the good news is that the rest of the area will stay dry during this cold stretch, so winter weather isn't a concern. Mother Nature is undoubtedly giving us a proper season's greeting to begin December and the holiday season with this extended cold stretch.
Have a great rest of the day, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
