BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The shell casings discovered by a first grader near a Barrington elementary school earlier this month may have come from the police department's firearms qualification training. The Primrose Hill Elementary School student found the shell casings outside nearly two weeks apart, according to police reports obtained by 12 News. He found the first shell casing on Nov. 6 while spending time outside for lunch. Then, on Nov. 18, he found the second shell casing while his teacher was reading to the class outside. The shell casings were examined and determined to be of the same make and caliber, according to the police reports. Investigators also said the rounds appeared to have been fired from different weapons. Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia told 12 News the department's firearms qualification training took place around the time the shell casings were discovered. He said roughly 5,000 rounds were fired throughout that training, and the spent shell casings were immediately disposed of at the police department. Throughout their investigation, officers ruled out any evidence of a shooting at or near the elementary school. The police report noted that no additional shell casings were found during a search of the school grounds. Correia said the police department is on the same trash pickup route as the school, so it's plausible that the shell casings fell out during a trash transfer. Close Thanks for signing up!
