Graffiti to be removed from historic Woonsocket building
Nov 27, 2024
WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — It's no secret that Woonsocket's Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company Building is an eyesore.
The Main Street building, which has sat vacant for years, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The six-story building also has hundreds of windows that are covered with graffiti.
But that will soon change, according to John Pagliarini, the city's interim planning director.
Pagliarini said that, after a long discussion between the city and the building's new owner, a final agreement has been reached to remove the graffiti.
"The new owner took the property about three or four months ago and they agreed to bring a lift in," Pagliarini explained, adding that the work is slated to begin next week.
With hundreds of visitors expected to visit the popular Polar Express nearby, Pagliarini hopes this will bring them a step closer to potentially revitalizing the space.
"More than likely there will be a mix use of commercial and residential space bringing additional life here to downtown," he said.
Pagliarini said it should take roughly a week to completely remove the graffiti.
