Thanksgiving prices a little lighter at grocery this year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Time is winding down to shop for Thanksgiving dinner, but some people are pre-planning at Kroger.
Kevin Bleier started his Wednesday morning at the Germantown Kroger on Farmington Boulevard on a mission to find everything needed for that perfect Thanksgiving dinner.
"I'm sorry but procrastination is ok," Bleier said. "We have a spinach loaf on my list. We have sweet potato casserole, and we need to get the turkey ready."
He wasn't the only one carrying around a shopping list.

Kroger Communications Manager George Brown says the Thanksgiving holiday is one of their busiest shopping weeks of the year.
"They're looking for Turkey. They're looking for yams and sweet potatoes. I mean anything that kind of is going to be on that traditional table is what they're going for," Brown said. "And as you can imagine, the day before Thanksgiving and even Thanksgiving itself are big days."

As you're shopping for that Thanksgiving dinner, you may notice a little extra change in your pocket.
According to a national survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, the cost of a classic Thanksgiving dinner for ten people is down five percent from last year - costing the average consumer just under $60.
However, that's still up nearly 20 percent from five years ago. The survey says while the price of dinner rolls and fresh cranberries rose, the price of hot ticket items such as sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie mix, and most importantly the turkey dropped.
"We've also had 99-cent turkeys this year. Normally the turkey wouldn't go on sale that cheap until right before Thanksgiving. This year we did it for weeks because we knew that people were looking for a better deal," Brown said.

However, for some people we spoke to it's not about the price of the meal, it's about the memories that come with it.
"This year we decided to do something different. Mama trying to retire herself. So, the siblings are cooking a dish trying to take the pressure off my mama but she still gone be in there," said Cylentae Jones and Cymetria Johnson.
"It's for the family. So, the cost doesn't matter," Bleier said.
