YEMASSEE, S.C. (WCBD) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is expected to have additional enforcement during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period. According to AAA, Nov. 27 was estimated to have a peak travel time during the evening with millions hitting the road for the holiday. Drivers heading northbound on I-95, got a head start as most began their trips early. They described the roads as being smooth, despite the amount of cars on the road. "Better than I thought it would be," Michael Hartline, a traveler, said. "It's just been a little bit slow in the southern part of South Carolina, but other than that it's been fine." The SCHP hosted safety breaks at rest stops located along interstate highways, with drivers stopping by to talk with troopers about their concerns and ask questions. Troopers gave travelers safety trips and what they are looking out for this weekend. "It's the same stuff we put in day in and day out, but we want to put an emphasis on it during the Thanksgiving holiday," Cpl. Nick Pye, South Carolina Highway Patrol, said. "That'd be driving a reasonable speed or a safe speed, limited distractions, don't drive and drive, and always wear your seatbelt anytime you're in a vehicle."  Travelers said they noticed more patrols along their trip, even outside of the state. "All through Georgia, came up about every two and a half minutes, it said there's a speed trap ahead," Hartline said. The corporal said that for those who haven't started traveling yet, they should expect busy roads ahead. "If you haven't left yet, make sure you pack your patience and understand there's going to be more traffic on our roadways, watch out for first responders, please drive a safe speed and don't drive impaired or with distractions," Pye said.
