Old Savannah City Mission prepares hundreds of Thanksgiving meals for those in need

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Thanksgiving is one day away, and the Old Savannah City Mission is hard at work in the kitchen preparing hundreds of meals for those in need.
After the shelter hosted a Thanksgiving feast last Saturday, they're continuing the tradition of giving back, ensuring no one goes without a warm meal this holiday season.
This year they are providing more than 30 turkeys for those who come in for a holiday meal.
"Within the last couple of months, we've seen an increase in the homeless men and women in the area," said Jermaine Ray, the program director for the Old Savannah City Mission, "just because it is getting colder up north and a lot of our friends and neighbors are going to migrate to the south."
Organizers say it's important to provide holiday meals with turkey down to cranberry sauce as it is a tradition that everyone needs.
How to set healthy boundaries this Thanksgiving
"We know that Thanksgiving is a time for family and fellowship and a lot of our friends and neighbors don't have that in the community," said Ray. "So, we want to make sure that they have the same treatment as everyone else and have a good Thanksgiving Day."
It's a tradition that organizers say has spanned more than 20 years.
"The founder, Pastor Larry McDaniel, he had a vision to help out the community and one of those things to help out was having a big Thanksgiving meal for friends and neighbors in the area," explained Ray.
With food prices on the rise, and many families struggling with food insecurity, the mission is stepping up to help our neighbors. This year, the shelter hopes to serve around 600 individuals total for the holiday, and 200 tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day.
The cooking Wednesday won't be the last of it. The shelter is providing three meals tomorrow: a hearty breakfast (from 7 to 9 a.m.), a chicken lunch and a turkey dinner.

The shelter has a goal to provide not only meals but essential items such as clothing, toiletries and more for those going through tough times.
The 2024 Point-In-Time Count says there was an increase in homelessness compared to last year. To add, according to Consumer Affairs, food prices are up nearly 5% over the last year, with Georgia seeing more than a 12% food insecurity rate increase.
